Fasting (vrat) suitability

No grainsNo saltNo onion or garlic

Made without cereals or pulses, so many families take it on fasting days such as Ekadashi or Navratri.

Fasting and offering customs differ between families, regions and sampradayas — some avoid all salt, milk, sugar or certain vegetables. Follow your own tradition and your elders’ guidance.

Offered on

Abhishek of Krishna (Janmashtami), Shiva (Shivaratri, Shravan Mondays), Satyanarayan puja on Purnima; Vishnu on Ekadashi

Ingredients

For 6 servings. 1 cup = 240 ml.

  • 1 cup fresh milk (boiled and cooled, or raw as per family custom)
  • 2 tbsp fresh curd
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp sugar or mishri (crystal sugar)
  • 4–5 tulsi leaves
  • 1 tsp chopped makhana or dry fruits (optional)

Method

  1. Wash a clean bowl, preferably silver, brass or steel, and keep it only for puja use.
  2. Whisk the curd until smooth so there are no lumps.
  3. Add the milk and stir gently, then add the ghee, honey and sugar one by one.
  4. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the tulsi leaves and the dry fruits if you use them.
  5. Use it for abhishek or offer it as it is, then share it with everyone as prasad in small spoonfuls.

Some families add Ganga jal or use raw milk; others always boil it. Make it fresh and use it the same day.
