The lagna is the sidereal zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn, each for roughly one and a half to two and a half hours. Signs of long ascension take longer to rise than signs of short ascension, and the durations change with latitude. Muhurat selection often starts by choosing a suitable lagna.
