Chandra Darshan is taken as the first evening after the New Moon on which Yallop's criterion (NAO Technical Note 69, 1997) predicts a naked-eye crescent (zone A or B). It assumes a clear sky and a flat western horizon, so actual first sightings can be a day later (or, with binoculars, earlier). The window runs from sunset to moonset.

Moonrise and moonset are for the civil day (midnight to midnight), so a day can have no moonrise or no moonset. Illumination and phase are at local noon.

About these calculations

Moonrise and moonset use the Moon's topocentric centre at the horizon (the convention of widely used Panchang publishers). Illuminated fraction k = (1 + cos i) / 2 with the phase angle i (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, ch. 48). Phases are the instants when the Moon–Sun longitude difference reaches 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°.

Checked against the US Naval Observatory phase times for September–November 2026 (within 1 minute), moonrise times published in Panchangs for Sankashti Chaturthi and Karwa Chauth 2026 in New Delhi (within 1 minute) and the 2026 Chandra Darshan dates of a published Panchang (11 of 12 months agree; in September the criterion gives the 12th, the published Panchang the 13th).

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
