Why do we play with colours on Holi?
A boy who was never afraid, a bonfire, and a morning full of colours.
-
Once there was a boy named Prahlad. He loved Lord Vishnu with all his heart and prayed every day. His father, the king, was proud and wanted everyone to pray only to him. -
The king’s sister Holika tried to trick Prahlad near a big fire. But Prahlad kept saying Vishnu’s name and was not afraid. He came out safe, and Holika’s trick failed. -
So, on the night before Holi, people light a bonfire called Holika Dahan. It reminds us that goodness and faith keep us safe. -
The next morning is full of colours! In Braj, people remember how little Krishna played with colours with Radha and his friends. -
On Holi we hug our friends and say sorry for any quarrels. Spring has come, and everyone is one big, colourful family.
Did you know?
Holi comes on the full-moon day of the month of Phalguna, at the start of spring.
Something to make
Make a colour wheel: mix two colours of paint and see what new colour you get. Always play Holi with gentle, safe colours and never put colour on someone who does not want it.
