About Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja)
Significance
Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha, is the festival of Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, and is traditionally taken as the herald of spring (vasanta), some forty days before Holi. Yellow, the colour of the ripening mustard fields, is the colour of the day in much of North India.
The Brahmavaivarta Purana is commonly cited for the tradition that Krishna first worshipped Saraswati on this Panchami and ordained her worship on it. Older traditions also link the day with Kama, the god of love, and his consort Rati, and with the spring festival of Madana. Many families choose it for a child’s first lesson in letters (vidyarambha, in Bengal hate khori).
How and where it is observed
Saraswati Puja is a major public festival in West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura, where schools, colleges and neighbourhood committees install images of the goddess. In Punjab and much of North India the day is Basant, with kites and yellow clothes, and the Sufi Basant at the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi, said to go back to Amir Khusrau, is held on it. The opening date of the Badrinath shrine for the year is traditionally announced on this day.
Rituals
Books, pens, musical instruments and the tools of one’s craft are placed before the goddess and worshipped, and in many Bengali homes they are not used for the rest of the day. Offerings include white and yellow flowers, sweets, saffron rice and seasonal fruit; in Bengal it is customary not to eat the season’s first kul (jujube) until it has been offered to Saraswati. Students offer pushpanjali in the morning, and community images are immersed the next day or soon after.
How the date is fixed
Vasant Panchami is Magha Shukla Panchami, the same month in both reckonings. Saraswati Puja belongs to the forenoon, so the Panchami must prevail in the Purvahna, taken here as the first half of the daytime, from sunrise to midday. If Panchami covers part of the forenoon on two days, the day with the greater coverage is taken; if it covers the forenoon on neither day, the day on which Panchami prevails longest.

How the date is determined
- The date is Magha Shukla Paksha Panchami; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails during Purvahna — the first half of the daytime.
- If the tithi prevails at that time on two consecutive days, the day on which it covers more of that period is taken.
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
