The date here is the evening on which Purnima prevails at Pradosh; the Dev Deepawali Mahotsav on the ghats of Varanasi is usually held on the Kartika Purnima day (Purnima at sunrise), shown as the alternative when it differs.

How the date is determined
- The date is Kartika Shukla Paksha Purnima; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails during Pradosh Kaal — the first fifth of the night after sunset.
- If the tithi prevails at that time on two consecutive days, the day on which it covers more of that period is taken.
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- When the day chosen is not the day on which the tithi prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi), that day is also shown as the alternative.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
Dev Deepawali is dated here by the classical Tripurotsava rule, Purnima at Pradosh, so in many years it falls on the evening before the Kartika Purnima bathing day (Purnima at sunrise, listed separately as Kartik Purnima). The Dev Deepawali Mahotsav on the ghats of Varanasi is usually held on the Kartika Purnima day instead: in 2020 it was on 30 November (Press Information Bureau), although Purnima prevailed at Pradosh only on 29 November. That day is shown as the alternative when it differs; for Varanasi, check the date announced there.
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
Rule source: Nirnaya Sindhu, Kartika-masa: Tripurotsava (lamps) on Kartika Purnima at Pradosh; when Purnima covers Pradosh on two evenings, the evening with the greater coverage. The Kartika Purnima day (Purnima at sunrise), on which the Varanasi Dev Deepawali Mahotsav is usually held (Press Information Bureau, Government of India, 30 November 2020: the Prime Minister took part in the Dev Deepawali Mahotsav in Varanasi), is shown as the alternative when it differs
