How this festival is celebrated in different regions, with the regional names and each date's rule.
How the date is determined
- The date is Kartika Shukla Paksha Shashthi; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
- If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- The date shown is the day of the Sandhya Arghya, offered to the setting Sun that evening; the Usha Arghya to the rising Sun follows at the next sunrise, after which the fast is broken.
- Regional exception, inferred from the Bihar and West Bengal holiday lists of 2025 and not a documented almanac rule: when Kartika Shukla Panchami prevails at two sunrises, the Kharna is on the first of those days and the Sandhya Arghya on the second, on whose evening Shashthi prevails; the day of Shashthi at sunrise is then shown as not selected.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
Chhath spans four days: Nahay-Khay, Kharna, the Sandhya Arghya (the date shown) and the Usha Arghya next morning. The Sandhya Arghya is on the day of Kartika Shukla Shashthi at sunrise, as the Government of India almanac (Rashtriya Panchang) dates Chhath; where Shashthi prevails at two sunrises the first is taken, the only one with Shashthi at the evening Arghya. When Panchami prevails at two sunrises, the date shown is the second of them instead (27 Oct 2025 at Patna and Kolkata, the date of the Bihar and West Bengal holiday lists): a regional exception inferred from those two lists, not a documented almanac rule. The Rashtriya Panchang and the Government of India holiday list give 28 Oct 2025, the day of Shashthi at sunrise in Bihar; where the exception applies, that day is shown as not selected.
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
Rule source: Surya-shashthi (Pratihara-shashthi), a regional vrata of Bihar and Mithila (no Nirnaya Sindhu or Dharma Sindhu ruling found): Nahay-Khay, Kharna, the Sandhya Arghya (the date shown), the Usha Arghya at the next sunrise. The Sandhya Arghya day is the day of Kartika Shukla Shashthi at sunrise (two sunrises → the first; none → the day it lies in). Government of India almanac (Rashtriya Panchang, IMD), Chhath (Bihar): 7 Nov 2024, 28 Oct 2025 (Saka 1947, item 62: Shashthi at sunrise in Bihar only that day), 15 Nov 2026. DoPT: 13 Nov 2018, 2 Nov 2019, 20 Nov 2020, 10 Nov 2021, 19 Nov 2023, 7 Nov 2024, 28 Oct 2025, 15 Nov 2026, 4 Nov 2027. Regional exception, not confirmed by any almanac: Panchami at two sunrises → the second day, inferred from the 2025 lists of Bihar (Kharna 26 Oct, Chhath 27 and 28 Oct) and West Bengal (27 Oct). "Shashthi at sunset" was rejected: it contradicts 10 Nov 2021 and 19 Nov 2023.
