Calculated fact

Panchak is the period during which the Moon transits sidereal Kumbha and Meena — from the start of the third pada of Dhanishta to the end of Revati. It lasts about five days and recurs roughly every 27 days. The weekday is the Hindu weekday (sunrise to sunrise) on which it began.

Traditional interpretation

In tradition, some activities are avoided or done with remedies during Panchak. The classification depends on the weekday on which Panchak begins.

Common classification: Roga (Sunday), Raja (Monday), Agni (Tuesday), Chora (Friday) and Mrityu (Saturday) Panchak. Many Panchangs do not give a separate name to Panchak beginning on Wednesday or Thursday and regard it as less restrictive.

The Panchak interval is an astronomical fact (Moon's position). Restrictions associated with it — such as avoiding southward travel, roofing, wood-gathering or certain funeral rites without remedies — are traditional and vary between communities.
