How the date is determined
- The date is Kartika Shukla Paksha Pratipada; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
- It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
- The sunrise counts only if the tithi then lasts at least 3 muhurtas (each a fifteenth of the daytime); if it is shorter, the previous day, on which the tithi begins, is taken.
- If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
- When the tithi prevails for at least three muhurtas (a fifth) of the daylight on two days, the earlier day, joined with the preceding tithi, is taken (this festival's own rule).
- If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
- Puja time shown: the first of these periods of the day in which the tithi prevails: Pratahkal, Sayankal.
- In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.
Traditional variation
When Amavasya lasts into the day after Diwali and Pratipada begins that day (e.g. 9 Nov 2026, Pratipada from 12:31 IST), this rule keeps that Amavasya-joined day, as the Government of India list does, with the puja in the Sayankal. Almanacs that require Pratipada at sunrise (Pratahkal), and the ISKCON (GCal) calendar, which keeps the day of Pratipada at sunrise, take the next day (10 Nov 2026).
This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.
Rule source: Govardhana-puja nirnaya (Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 2, Kartika Shukla Pratipada: Balipratipada, Annakuta, Govardhana-puja; Dharma Sindhu, Pariccheda 2, Kartika): the Amavasya-joined Pratipada is the one for go-krida, the Dwitiya-joined one is condemned ("pratipad-darsha-samyoge kridanam tu gavam matam, paraviddhasu yah kuryat putra-dara-dhana-kshayah"). So: Pratipada over at least three muhurtas (1/5) of the daylight on two days → the first, Amavasya-joined day; otherwise Pratipada at sunrise lasting at least three muhurtas; shorter → the previous day, on which it begins. Puja time shown (display only): the Pratahkal while Pratipada prevails, else the Sayankal. DoPT holiday OMs: 8 Nov 2018, 28 Oct 2019, 15 Nov 2020, 5 Nov 2021, 13 Nov 2023, 2 Nov 2024, 22 Oct 2025, 9 Nov 2026, 30 Oct 2027 (2020, 2023 and 2026 Amavasya-joined). ISKCON GCal 11 (Delhi, Mayapur) keeps the sunrise-Pratipada day: 22 Oct 2025, 10 Nov 2026.
