How the date is determined

  1. The date is Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
  2. It falls on the day when this tithi prevails at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
  3. The sunrise counts only if the tithi then lasts at least 3 muhurtas (each a fifteenth of the daytime); if it is shorter, the previous day, on which the tithi begins, is taken.
  4. If the tithi is present at two sunrises (a vriddhi tithi), the first day is taken.
  5. If the tithi does not touch that period on any day (a kshaya tithi), the Hindu day on which the tithi prevails longest is used.
  6. In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.

Traditional variation

When Chaturdashi lasts less than three muhurtas after sunrise, this rule takes the previous day (e.g. 28 Sep 2012 at New Delhi, Chaturdashi until 08:03); some almanacs, and the Ganesh Visarjan custom, keep the sunrise day in such years.

This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.

Rule source: Ananta-vrata (Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 2, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi; Dharma Sindhu, Pariccheda 2, Ananta-chaturdashi): the Chaturdashi at sunrise, accepted when it prevails at least three muhurtas after sunrise ("udaye trimuhurtapi grahya"; muhurta = 1/15 of the daytime); for less, the previous day, on which Chaturdashi began. Chaturdashi at two sunrises → the first day, which it covers entirely. Published almanac sample (New Delhi) 25 Sep 2026.

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
