|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/01/2027 (Thu) | Makar Sankranti / Magha Bihu | Makar Sankranti | 15/01/2027 (Fri) (+1) | Different | Why the dates differConvention, not a rule error (for the Jyotish reviewer): the Makara ingress is at 21:14 IST on 14 Jan 2027, after sunset (17:45) and before midnight, about three and a half hours after sunset, beyond the 3-ghati sandhya in which Dharma Sindhu keeps a Makara ingress on the day of that sunset. The classical rule for a night Makara ingress (Dharma Sindhu, Sankranti-nirnaya; rule sankranti_makara_night_next_day) puts the Punya Kaal on 15 Jan, the day DoPT prints 'Pongal, Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday' (#3, matched by the engine's pongal). The Government of India almanac agrees with the engine: the Rashtriya Panchang, Saka 1948 (main festivals), prints Makar Sankranti, Til Sankranti and Pongal on 25 Pausha = 15 Jan 2027 (item 68) and Bhogi, Sankranti (Bengal) and Bihu (Assam) on 14 Jan (item 67). DoPT prints 'Makar Sankranti / Magha Bihu' (#2) on 14 Jan, the same civil date as in every OM 2024-2027 (see dopt:2024:makar_sankranti), here also the civil and Hindu day of the ingress. The engine's Lohri, the eve of 1 Magh (the Hindu day of the ingress), is 13 Jan 2027, as the Rashtriya Panchang's 'Lohri (Jammu and Kashmir)' (item 66). |
| 22/03/2027 (Mon) | Holika Dahan, Dolyatra | Holika Dahan | 21/03/2027 (Sun) (-1) | Different | Why the dates differConvention: Phalguna Purnima runs 21 Mar 18:21 to 22 Mar 16:13 IST (New Delhi sunset 18:32 / 18:33), so only the evening of 21 Mar has Purnima in Pradosh, and that whole Pradosh is in Bhadra (Vishti 21 Mar 18:21 to 22 Mar 05:15). The engine's Bhadra policy (holika_pradosh_in_bhadra_avoiding_mukha) keeps Holika Dahan on 21 Mar. DoPT prints 'Holika Dahan, Dolyatra' (#10) on 22 Mar, the day Purnima prevails at sunrise (the Dolyatra day). |
| 23/03/2027 (Tue) | Holi | Holi (Dhulandi) | 22/03/2027 (Mon) (-1) | Different | Why the dates differRule difference to review: the engine's Holi is its Holika Dahan + 1 day, i.e. 22 Mar 2027, a day with Purnima at sunrise (Purnima until 16:13 IST). DoPT gazettes Holi (Annexure I #3) on 23 Mar, the day Chaitra Krishna Pratipada prevails at sunrise (Pratipada 22 Mar 16:13 to 23 Mar 14:28 IST). In 2024-2026 the engine's Holi matches DoPT. |

Sunrise, sunset and Moon phases
Compared with the U.S. Naval Observatory (public domain): sunrise and sunset at sea level with standard refraction, and the instants of New Moon, Full Moon and the quarters. Differences in minutes, ours minus USNO. aa.usno.navy.mil
No USNO reference values for this year.
USNO publishes its times rounded to the minute, so differences up to about one minute are rounding. NOAA's solar calculator uses the same rise and set definition; its values are not stored here separately.
How the comparison is made
The official lists are transcribed by hand from the published documents (each tied to its file's checksum) and stored with the site's code; they are never adjusted to match our results. Our dates come from the same engine and default calculation profile as every page of the site.
A different date is not necessarily an error. Most differences come from a documented convention:
- Udaya tithi: many official lists take the tithi prevailing at sunrise, while the texts decide some festivals by the tithi at another part of the day.
- Vyapini rules: festivals such as Diwali (Pradosh), Janmashtami (midnight) or Navami are fixed by the tithi present at a particular time; when two days qualify, traditions choose differently.
- Regional rules: a state may follow its own solar or lunar calendar, month system (amanta or purnimanta) or local custom.
- Administrative dates: a government may keep a holiday on a fixed or convenient day.
The reason shown for each difference is the note recorded with the reference data (in English). A difference without a recorded reason is marked as not yet explained and reviewed.
This report shows how our calculated dates compare with these references; it is not a claim that any calendar is the only correct one. Traditions may vary.
