Chhath puja vidhi
The four days of Chhath — Nahay Khay, Kharna, the Sandhya Arghya to the setting sun and the Usha Arghya at sunrise — with the soop of thekua and seasonal produce, at the sunset and sunrise of your city.
When to do the puja
Chhath is kept on Kartika Shukla Shashthi: the Sandhya Arghya at sunset on Shashthi and the Usha Arghya at sunrise the next morning, when the fast is broken.

Fasting
After the Kharna meal the vrati keeps a fast without water for about 36 hours, until the Usha Arghya.
Fasting is a devotional choice, not a requirement: children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women and anyone unwell or on medication should eat as needed or ask a doctor first.
Samagri checklist
Suggested quantities for a household puja — adjust them to your custom. Tick the items as you collect them; the ticks are kept only in this browser.
Step-by-step vidhi
Each step says what to do, then the mantra. A short puja may use the five offerings (panchopachara) instead of sixteen.
-
Day 1 — Nahay Khay
On Chaturthi the vrati bathes (in a river if possible), cleans the house and eats one satvik meal, traditionally rice, chana dal and bottle gourd cooked without onion and garlic.
-
Day 2 — Kharna
On Panchami the vrati fasts all day and in the evening, after worship, eats kheer of jaggery and rice with roti; the prasad is shared, and the waterless fast begins.
-
Sankalpa (resolve)
Take water, akshat, a flower and a coin in the right hand and state the time and place (the Panchang details below), your name and gotra (if known) and the purpose: the Chhath vrata and the arghya to Surya and Chhathi Maiya. Then let the water flow onto the ground or a plate.
ॐ विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः ।अद्य … मासे … पक्षे … तिथौ … वासरे …… गोत्रः … नामाहं … पूजनं करिष्ये ॥
Paddhati formula A priest or an elder can recite the full sankalpa; saying it in your own language is equally accepted in household worship.
-
Day 3 — Sandhya Arghya
In the afternoon carry the soop and daura with thekua, fruits, sugarcane and seasonal produce to the ghat (or a clean water tub at home). Standing in the water at sunset, offer arghya of water (or milk) to the setting sun with the soop raised, while the family sings Chhath songs.

Lighting the lamp
Light the main ghee lamp on the right side of the deity (as you face it) and keep it burning through the puja.

Day 4 — Usha Arghya
Return to the ghat before dawn and offer arghya to the rising sun in the same way. Then pray to Chhathi Maiya, take the blessing of the elders and break the fast with water, prasad and ginger or jaggery.

Kshama prarthana
With folded hands ask forgiveness for any omission in the worship, then distribute the prasad.

Visarjana and prasad
Distribute the thekua and fruits of the soop as prasad to family and neighbours.
Regional variations
- Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai of Nepal; also wherever families from these regions live.
- Chaiti Chhath is kept the same way on Chaitra Shukla Shashthi.
- No priest is needed: the vrati performs every step; songs and offerings follow the family’s and the village’s tradition.
Follow your family tradition
Families and regions perform this puja in different ways. Where your family or your priest follows a different order, other mantras or other materials, follow your family tradition.

Sources
The festival-day rule comes from the festival engine’s definition; the procedure from these texts. Where we say “commonly followed practice”, no classical text prescribes the custom in this form.
- Commonly followed practice — Household customs as families commonly follow them, without one classical text that prescribes them in this form. Follow your family tradition where it differs.

- Date rule: Surya-shashthi (Pratihara-shashthi), a regional vrata of Bihar and Mithila (no Nirnaya Sindhu or Dharma Sindhu ruling found): Nahay-Khay, Kharna, the Sandhya Arghya (the date shown), the Usha Arghya at the next sunrise. The Sandhya Arghya day is the day of Kartika Shukla Shashthi at sunrise (two sunrises → the first; none → the day it lies in). Government of India almanac (Rashtriya Panchang, IMD), Chhath (Bihar): 7 Nov 2024, 28 Oct 2025 (Saka 1947, item 62: Shashthi at sunrise in Bihar only that day), 15 Nov 2026. DoPT: 13 Nov 2018, 2 Nov 2019, 20 Nov 2020, 10 Nov 2021, 19 Nov 2023, 7 Nov 2024, 28 Oct 2025, 15 Nov 2026, 4 Nov 2027. Regional exception, not confirmed by any almanac: Panchami at two sunrises → the second day, inferred from the 2025 lists of Bihar (Kharna 26 Oct, Chhath 27 and 28 Oct) and West Bengal (27 Oct). "Shashthi at sunset" was rejected: it contradicts 10 Nov 2021 and 19 Nov 2023.
