Satyanarayan katha and puja vidhi
The Satyanarayan vrata as households keep it on Purnima or on any auspicious occasion: mandap, kalash, the sixteen offerings with tulsi, the five chapters of the katha, aarti and the prasad everyone must take.
When to do the puja
The katha itself says the vrata may be kept on any day; Purnima, especially in the evening, is the most usual, and many families keep it after a wedding, a house-warming or any happy event.
പൗർണ്ണമി: 26/10/2026 (തിങ്കൾ)
The festival engine gives no separate puja window for this day; do the puja at the time your family keeps, avoiding Rahu Kaal.
Later dates: പൗർണ്ണമി 24/11/2026 (ചൊവ്വ), പൗർണ്ണമി 23/12/2026 (ബുധൻ), പൗർണ്ണമി 22/01/2027 (വെള്ളി)
Festival page: dates, rules and timings
Puja windows come from the festival engine’s rules; where those rules are still in review, the festival page carries the Beta label.

Samagri checklist
Suggested quantities for a household puja — adjust them to your custom. Tick the items as you collect them; the ticks are kept only in this browser.
Step-by-step vidhi
Each step says what to do, then the mantra. A short puja may use the five offerings (panchopachara) instead of sixteen.
-
Preparation
Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja place, spread a cloth on the chowki and keep every item of the checklist within reach before the muhurat begins. Sit on an asana facing east or north. Make a small mandap over the chowki with banana stems or leaves and place the picture of Satyanarayan in it.
-
Pavitrikarana (purification)
Take a little water in the left palm, cover it with the right and sprinkle it over yourself and the materials with a flower or kusha while saying the verse.
अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा ।यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः ॥
From our Bhakti library · Apavitrah Pavitro Va (purification verse) -

Lighting the lamp
Light the main ghee lamp on the right side of the deity (as you face it) and keep it burning through the puja.

From our Bhakti library · Shubham Karoti (evening lamp prayer) -
Sankalpa (resolve)
Take water, akshat, a flower and a coin in the right hand and state the time and place (the Panchang details below), your name and gotra (if known) and the purpose: the Satyanarayan vrata and katha. Then let the water flow onto the ground or a plate.
ॐ विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः ।अद्य … मासे … पक्षे … तिथौ … वासरे …… गोत्रः … नामाहं … पूजनं करिष्ये ॥
Paddhati formula A priest or an elder can recite the full sankalpa; saying it in your own language is equally accepted in household worship.
-
Ganesha puja
Worship Ganesha first, who removes obstacles: offer water, roli, akshat, durva, a flower and a sweet (a betel nut wrapped in mauli can stand for Ganesha).

Visarjana and prasad
Distribute the panchamrit and prasad to everyone present — the katha stresses that no one should leave without taking it — and share it with neighbours.
Regional variations
- Bengal and Odisha: Satyanarayan (Satyapir in parts of Bengal) is kept on Purnima evenings with “sinni” prasad of flour, milk, banana and sugar.
- Maharashtra and Karnataka: commonly performed after weddings and house-warmings, with sheera as the prasad.
- Some families add a small havan or worship the Navagrahas first; the text read varies between printed editions.
Follow your family tradition
Families and regions perform this puja in different ways. Where your family or your priest follows a different order, other mantras or other materials, follow your family tradition.

Sources
The festival-day rule comes from the festival engine’s definition; the procedure from these texts. Where we say “commonly followed practice”, no classical text prescribes the custom in this form.
- Satyanarayan Vrata Katha (traditionally from the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana) — The five chapters of the katha read at the puja; the attribution is traditional and the text is not in every manuscript of the Purana.
- Puja Prakasha (Viramitrodaya of Mitra Mishra, 17th century) — The section of the Viramitrodaya on worship: the upacharas (offerings) and their order.
- Standard puja paddhati (household manuals) — The formulas common to printed puja manuals: achamana with the names of Vishnu, the sankalpa, and "… samarpayami" for each offering.
- Commonly followed practice — Household customs as families commonly follow them, without one classical text that prescribes them in this form. Follow your family tradition where it differs.
- Our Bhakti library — Texts quoted from the library carry that text’s own source and attribution on its page.
- Date rule: Tithi–kaal rule of the Dharmashastra digests (Nirnaya Sindhu / Dharma Sindhu), as applied by modern drik-ganita (computed) Panchangs
This guide describes common household practice for devotional use. It is not a substitute for a priest where your tradition asks for one, and it makes no promise of any result.
