How the date is determined

  1. The date is Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Chaturthi; the month name is the same in the Amanta and Purnimanta systems.
  2. It falls on the day when this tithi prevails during Madhyahna — the third fifth of the daytime, around midday.
  3. If the tithi covers the whole of that period on both days, the first day is taken.
  4. If it covers parts of that period on both days that differ by less than 24 minutes, they count as equal and the first day is taken; the whole period on one day is preferred to a part on the other.
  5. If the tithi prevails at that time on two consecutive days, the day on which it covers more of that period is taken.
  6. If the tithi touches that period on neither day, the first of the two days it touches is taken.
  7. In a year with an Adhik month of the same name, it is observed in the regular (Nija) month.

Traditional variation

When Chaturthi covers only part of the first day's Madhyahna and the whole of the next day's, the next day is taken (as on 19 Sep 2023); when it covers nearly equal parts of both (within 24 minutes), the first. A stricter reading of the Tritiya-joined rule takes the first day whenever Chaturthi touches its Madhyahna.

This is the date given by the rule shown above for the selected place. It is not the only valid date: regional Panchangs, family customs and sampradayas may observe it on a different day.

Rule source: Ganesha-chaturthi (Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 2, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi; Dharma Sindhu, Pariccheda 2): Madhyahna-vyapini Chaturthi. The Tritiya-joined Chaturthi is praised for Ganesha ("caturthi gananathasya matrividdha prashasyate"), so the first day is taken when the karmakala does not decide: the whole Madhyahna on both days, equal parts of both (samya: within one ghati, 24 minutes), or neither. Otherwise karmakala-vyapti (Nirnaya Sindhu, Pariccheda 1): the whole Madhyahna on one day and a part on the other → the complete one; clearly unequal parts (vaishamya) → the greater. DoPT holiday OMs: 13 Sep 2018, 2 Sep 2019, 22 Aug 2020, 10 Sep 2021, 19 Sep 2023 (first Madhyahna in part, second in full), 7 Sep 2024, 27 Aug 2025, 14 Sep 2026, 4 Sep 2027; Government of Odisha 31 Aug 2022, 19 Sep 2023, 7 Sep 2024, 27 Aug 2025, 14 Sep 2026.

Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention. Times are shown for the selected place, time zone and calculation profile.
