Gochar: reading the moving sky

Gochar compares where the grahas are today with the birth chart, traditionally counted from the natal Moon sign. This lesson covers how long each graha stays in a sign, the classical favourable houses, vedha and ashtakavarga.

A birth chart is a snapshot: it never changes. The sky, however, keeps moving, and the grahas pass through sign after sign for the rest of your life. Gochar (literally “movement”, the usual word for transits) is the traditional method of reading those current positions against the fixed birth chart. This lesson explains how a transit is counted, how long each graha stays in a sign, which houses the classical texts call favourable, and two refinements: vedha and ashtakavarga.

Today’s sky against the birth chart

A transit is simply a current position, counted from a point in the birth chart. Suppose your natal Moon is in Makara (Capricorn) and Saturn is in Kumbha (Aquarius) today. Count Makara as 1: Kumbha is 2, so Saturn is “transiting the 2nd from the Moon”. For someone whose Moon is in Meena, the same Saturn is in the 12th. Where Saturn stands is a calculation; what the 2nd or the 12th house signifies is traditional interpretation.

Why the Moon? The classical gochara chapters count transits from the natal Moon sign, the janma rashi, because the tradition links the Moon with the mind and day-to-day experience. Many astrologers also look at transits from the lagna, and some combine both. Newspaper rashifal columns use only the Moon sign, which is why they can group all readers into just twelve sections.

Roughly how long each graha stays in one sign, from the Moon’s two and a quarter days to Saturn’s two and a half years.

Seen from the Earth, every graha from Mercury to Saturn sometimes appears to slow down, stop and move backward for a while. This is called vakri (retrograde) motion. A retrograde graha can leave a sign, slip back into it and then leave again, so ingress dates often come in sets of three. The Sun and the Moon are never retrograde, while Rahu and Ketu move backward as a rule.

Speed decides how a transit is used. The slow grahas — Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — stay long enough to describe a phase of life, so astrologers give them the most weight. The Moon’s two-day stay is used mainly in muhurta, the choice of a suitable day or time.

Favourable houses from the Moon

Mantreswara’s Phaladeepika (ch. 26, on gochara phala, the results of transits) lists for each graha the houses from the natal Moon where its transit is traditionally read as favourable. Every other house is read as unfavourable. The lists are:

Two patterns stand out. The natural malefics — Sun, Mars, Saturn and the nodes — are read well mainly in 3, 6 and 11, which belong to the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11, the “houses of growth”). And the 11th appears in every list. A worked example: with the Moon in Simha, count Simha 1, Kanya 2, Tula 3, Vrishchika 4, Dhanu 5. Jupiter in Dhanu is in the 5th, a favourable house for Jupiter; Saturn in Vrishchika would be in the 4th, which is not on Saturn’s list.

Vedha and ashtakavarga

The same chapter adds a check called vedha (obstruction). Each favourable house is paired with a vedha house; if another graha transits that vedha house at the same time, the good result is said to be blocked. For Jupiter the pairs are 2 with 12, 5 with 4, 7 with 3, 9 with 10 and 11 with 8. For Saturn they are 3 with 12, 6 with 9 and 11 with 5. So Jupiter in the 5th from the Moon is read as favourable only while no other graha occupies the 4th. The text exempts two father–son pairs: the Sun and Saturn, and the Moon and Mercury, do not obstruct each other.

Ashtakavarga (“eightfold division”) refines this further. From fixed tables applied to the birth chart, each sign receives 0 to 8 bindus (points) for each graha, contributed by the seven grahas and the lagna. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the method at length. A graha transiting a sign where it holds more bindus — traditionally 4 or more — is read as more supportive. So two people with the Moon in the same sign can receive different readings of the very same Saturn transit.

Your own transits

The example below lists the sign of each graha today and counts it from your natal Moon sign, using your saved birth details, or the sky right now if none are saved. It also says whether Sade Sati is running, the subject of the next lesson. The positions and house counts are calculations; reading them as favourable or not is the classical interpretation described above.

Traditions differ on the details: whether to count from the Moon, the lagna or both, and how Rahu and Ketu take part in vedha (this site lets them follow Saturn’s pairs but not obstruct each other). Transit readings are traditional indications, not forecasts. The platform’s own back-test of its timing windows, built from slow-planet transits, found no measurable timing signal (z ≈ 0.9); module 10 explains it.
