Few terms in Jyotish cause as much worry as "Manglik". In practice it is a simple positional rule about Mars, and the way it is applied differs so much between traditions that a calm, informed look is far more useful than alarm.

The basic rule

A chart is traditionally called Manglik (also Mangal or Kuja dosha) when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Houses here are counted whole-sign, from a reference point:

  • from the Lagna (ascendant), which many consider the primary reference;
  • from the Moon;
  • from Venus.

This platform reports each reference separately, so you can see, for example, that Mars is in the 7th from the Lagna but in the 3rd from the Moon. When the birth time is unknown, only the Moon and Venus references can be evaluated.

Why answers differ

Several choices change the result:

  • The 2nd house. One widely followed variant excludes the 2nd house and uses only 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12. This site shows both variants.
  • Which references count. Some astrologers look only at the Lagna, others at the Lagna and Moon, others at all three.
  • Cancellations. Commonly cited cancellation conditions include Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) and Mars exalted (Makara). Other texts and teachers add many more conditions, and none of these lists is universally accepted. This platform shows the listed conditions for information only and does not use them to switch the result off.

Because six of twelve houses qualify, and up to three references are checked, a large share of people meet at least one variant of the rule. It is a very ordinary chart feature, not a rare or special condition.

Keeping it in perspective

Traditionally, Manglik status is compared between both partners, and many families consider the matter settled when both charts share it. Beyond that, it is one traditional factor among many. Compatibility in a real marriage rests on mutual respect, shared values, communication, family support and free consent. No positional rule can predict those, and no one needs to feel anxious, or to buy anything, because of a label.

On this platform

The Kundli tool applies the canonical rule (Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna, or from the Moon when the birth time is unknown) with four commonly cited cancellations, and shows the final status; the Mars house from each reference and both variants are shown for reference. The Kundli Milan tool places the two partners' results side by side without drawing a verdict. Traditions may vary by region and school.
