महत्त्व
Shashthi Shraddha is for those who died on a Shashthi, the sixth tithi, in either fortnight; there is no special category of the departed for this day. The Mahabharata’s tithi list (Anushasana Parva, Section 87) associates the sixth day with splendour, and the Brahma Purana’s list with being honoured by the world.
The Shashthi of this fortnight has one distinctive classical association, Kapila Shashthi. Dharma Sindhu describes Bhadrapada Krishna Shashthi falling on a Tuesday with Rohini nakshatra as a rare and highly meritorious combination, made still more so when the Sun is in Hasta, and lists Kapila Shashthi among the occasions for a Shraddha. The full combination is uncommon and does not occur every year.
कसरी र कहाँ मनाइन्छ
Shashthi is one of the Nanda tithis (with Pratipada and Ekadashi), and Dharma Sindhu advises that a person who performs the Mahalaya only once, on a day other than the death tithi, should avoid these tithis, along with Chaturdashi and Fridays; the restriction does not apply when Shashthi is the parent’s own death tithi. Dharma Sindhu also allows Shashthi as a day from which a shortened Mahalaya may begin and continue to Amavasya.
विधि-विधान
For Shashthi ancestors the Shraddha follows the usual Mahalaya order: brahmana-bhojana, pinda-dana and tarpana, with food placed for the cow, crow and dog. In years of Kapila Shashthi, Dharma Sindhu also describes a Surya-vrata with a fast, worship of the Sun and the gift of a tawny (kapila) cow; this is rarely kept in full today, and most families simply perform the Shraddha for their Shashthi ancestors.
मिति कसरी निर्धारण गरिन्छ
The date is Bhadrapada Krishna Shashthi (Amanta), or Ashvina Krishna Shashthi (Purnimanta), on the day Shashthi holds the afternoon Aparahna. This page gives the tithi date only; whether that day is also a Kapila Shashthi depends on the weekday, the Moon’s nakshatra and the Sun’s nakshatra, which can be checked in the daily Panchang for that date.

मिति कसरी निर्धारण हुन्छ
- अमान्त पद्धतिमा (औँसीमा महिना सकिने) यो भाद्रपद कृष्ण पक्ष षष्ठी हो; उत्तर भारतको अधिकांश भागमा प्रयोग हुने पूर्णिमान्त पद्धतिमा (पूर्णिमामा महिना सकिने) उही दिनलाई आश्विन कृष्ण पक्ष षष्ठी भनिन्छ।
- यो तिथि अपराह्न मा रहने दिन पर्छ — दिनमानको चौथो पाँचौँ भाग, दिउँसो।
- तिथि लगातार दुई दिन त्यस समयमा रहे, त्यो अवधिको बढी भाग ओगट्ने दिन लिइन्छ।
- तिथिले कुनै पनि दिन त्यो अवधि छुँदैन भने (क्षय तिथि), तिथि सबैभन्दा लामो रहने हिन्दू दिन प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
- उही नामको अधिक महिना भएको वर्षमा यो सामान्य (निज) महिनामा मनाइन्छ।
- श्राद्ध दिउँसो गरिन्छ: तिथि अपराह्नमा रहनुका आधारमा छानिन्छ, र त्यस दिनका कुतप, रौहिण र अपराह्न समयावधि देखाइन्छन्।
परम्परागत भिन्नता
यो छानिएको स्थानका लागि माथि देखाइएको नियमले दिएको मिति हो। यो मात्र मान्य मिति होइन: क्षेत्रीय पञ्चाङ्ग, पारिवारिक चलन र सम्प्रदायहरूले फरक दिन मनाउन सक्छन्।
