The word muhurat (Sanskrit muhurta) has two meanings. It is a unit of time, and it is also the tradition of choosing a suitable moment to begin something important: a wedding, a house-warming (griha pravesh), a journey, a new business. This lesson covers both meanings and the building blocks that every muhurat almanac uses. The next lesson puts them together into a working method.

The muhurta as a unit of time

Classical timekeeping divides the full day, sunrise to the next sunrise, into 30 muhurtas: 15 for the daytime and 15 for the night. One muhurta equals 2 ghatis, and a ghati is 24 minutes, so on average a muhurta lasts 48 minutes. Because day and night change length through the year, the day muhurtas are really one-fifteenth of the actual daytime. On a day of exactly 12 hours each lasts 48 minutes; on a 13-hour summer day each lasts 52 minutes.

The 8th of the 15 day muhurtas is Abhijit, which straddles local noon. Worked example: sunrise 6:10, sunset 18:10, so the daytime is 12 hours and each muhurta is 48 minutes. Seven muhurtas take 7 × 48 = 336 minutes, or 5 h 36 m, so Abhijit runs from 11:46 to 12:34, centred on local noon at 12:10. At night, the muhurta that ends about 48 minutes before sunrise (the 14th of the 15) is the well-known Brahma muhurta.

Panchanga shuddhi: the five limbs must suit the work

Panchanga shuddhi means "purity of the five limbs". Before anything else, the tradition checks that the tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga (the 27-fold Sun–Moon combination) and karana (half-tithi) are suitable for the specific activity. Texts such as Muhurta Chintamani give separate lists for marriage, travel, building, education and so on, so a day that suits one work may not suit another.

The order in which a muhurat is narrowed down: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana first, then the rising sign (lagna), then the daily periods to avoid.

Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika

A second family of rules divides the daytime, sunrise to sunset, into eight equal parts. On each weekday, one part is Rahu kaal, one is Yamaganda and one is Gulika kaal. Rahu kaal falls in the 8th part on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday and 3rd on Saturday. Rahu kaal and Yamaganda are avoided for new beginnings; Gulika is read differently by different almanacs.

Worked example: on a Monday with sunrise at 6:00 and sunset at 18:00, the daytime is 12 hours, so each eighth is 90 minutes. Rahu kaal is the 2nd part, from 7:30 to 9:00. Because the parts follow the real sunrise and sunset, the clock times shift every day and from city to city; a printed table for one place does not fit another.

Rahu kaal is observed most strictly in South India, while many North and West Indian families rely more on Choghadiya and the five limbs. Neither practice is "more correct"; they are regional customs. The site shows these periods as traditional markers, not as warnings of harm.

Choghadiya

Choghadiya, popular in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, splits the daytime into 8 parts and the night into another 8. Each part takes one of seven names: Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered good; Char is neutral and often used for travel; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided. The sequence of the day begins with the part ruled by the weekday lord, so Sunday opens with Udveg (the Sun) and Monday with Amrit (the Moon).

The day and the night each divided into eight Choghadiya parts, with the good, neutral and avoided names shown in different shades.

All of these markers are calculations from sunrise, sunset and the Sun's and Moon's longitudes. Whether a marked hour is favourable is traditional interpretation. Below, you can see today's five limbs for your place, the starting point of every muhurat check.
