Choosing a vivah muhurat is usually a family's first conversation with the Panchang once a wedding is agreed. The classical approach combines a small set of favourable nakshatras with a longer list of periods to avoid, and then narrows the result for the couple.
The eleven vivah nakshatras
This platform's vivah rule set requires the Moon to be in one of eleven nakshatras traditionally favoured for marriage:
- Rohini
- Mrigashira
- Magha
- Uttara Phalguni
- Hasta
- Swati
- Anuradha
- Mula
- Uttara Ashadha
- Uttara Bhadrapada
- Revati
Periods traditionally avoided
The following are required to be absent:
- Chaturmas: from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, the months when the gods are traditionally said to rest.
- Kharmas: while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena.
- Guru or Shukra asta: when Jupiter or Venus is combust (too close to the Sun to be visible).
- Adhik Maas: the intercalary lunar month.
- Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya.
- Rahu Kaal and Bhadra (Vishti karana).
Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal, Dur Muhurat, Varjyam and inauspicious Panchang yogas are avoided where possible, and Tuesday is traditionally avoided as a preference.
The couple's own factors
A general date is only the start. When birth details are given, the tool checks Tara bala (required) and Chandra bala (preferred) for the selected person or persons. In practice the family priest also chooses a suitable lagna for the actual ceremony, often a specific window of the evening or night, and family and regional customs — such as months or weekdays a community prefers or avoids — play a large part.
Why "wedding date" lists differ
Printed and online lists of wedding dates rarely match exactly. Panchangs differ in how strictly they treat preferred rules, whether they use amanta or purnimanta months, the ayanamsa and sunrise used, which tithi or nakshatra prevails when one changes during the day, and which regional additions they apply. None of these is necessarily wrong. Traditions may vary by region and Panchang convention.
On this platform
The Vivah Muhurat finder lists candidate windows for your location, showing each rule met or missed. The rule set is marked "editorial review required", and a final choice is best made with your family priest. See also Ashtakoota Guna Milan.
