Puja vidhi · The family deity (ishta devata)

Raksha Bandhan vidhi

Preparing the rakhi thali, offering the rakhi to the family deity, tilak and aarti of the brother and tying the rakhi with the raksha mantra — in the Bhadra-free window of Shravana Purnima for your city.

When to do the puja

The rakhi is tied on Shravana Purnima in the afternoon (Aparahna) or Pradosh, outside Bhadra, which tradition avoids for this rite.

Step-by-step vidhi

Each step says what to do, then the mantra. A short puja may use the five offerings (panchopachara) instead of sixteen.

  1. Preparation

Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja place, spread a cloth on the chowki and keep every item of the checklist within reach before the muhurat begins. Sit on an asana facing east or north. Prepare the thali with roli, akshat, the rakhi, a lamp, sweets and water.

  2. Lighting the lamp

Light the main ghee lamp on the right side of the deity (as you face it) and keep it burning through the puja.

  3. Ganesha puja

Worship Ganesha first, who removes obstacles: offer water, roli, akshat, durva, a flower and a sweet (a betel nut wrapped in mauli can stand for Ganesha).

    वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभ ।निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

    ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ॥

  4. Offering the rakhi to the deity

First offer a rakhi, roli and akshat to Ganesha or the family deity at the altar.

    ॐ इष्टदेवतायै नमः ॥
    Paddhati formula
  5. Tilak, rakhi and aarti

The brother sits facing east with a cloth or cap on his head. The sister applies a roli tilak with akshat, ties the rakhi on his right wrist with the mantra, offers a sweet and waves the lamp in aarti; the brother gives a gift and his promise of protection.

  6. Kshama prarthana

With folded hands ask forgiveness for any omission in the worship, then distribute the prasad.

The festival-day rule comes from the festival engine’s definition; the procedure from these texts. Where we say “commonly followed practice”, no classical text prescribes the custom in this form.

This guide describes common household practice for devotional use. It is not a substitute for a priest where your tradition asks for one, and it makes no promise of any result.
