Exceptions, Manglik matching and the limits of Milan

The exceptions that matching manuals list for Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, how Manglik status is compared, what a guna score does not measure, and why the choice of a partner belongs to the two adults.

A guna total is rarely read on its own. Matching manuals list exceptions (parihara) under which a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is not counted as a dosha, and astrologers also compare the Manglik status of the two charts. This lesson describes those rules as the manuals give them, and then sets out, plainly, what the whole exercise cannot tell a family.

Exceptions to Nadi dosha

Nadi dosha arises when both Moon nakshatras belong to the same nadi. Manuals commonly list exceptions: the same rashi but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different rashis. Example: Krittika and Rohini are both Antya nadi, so a pair with those nakshatras scores 0 in Nadi. But if both Moons are in Taurus — Krittika’s last three padas lie in Taurus — the pair shares a rashi with different nakshatras, and many manuals treat the dosha as cancelled.

The second case also involves Krittika, which spans two signs: one partner’s Moon in Krittika pada 1 (Aries) and the other’s in Krittika pada 3 (Taurus) share a nakshatra but not a rashi. Some manuals add further conditions, such as different padas of the same nakshatra.

Exceptions to Bhakoot dosha

Bhakoot dosha arises from the 6–8, 9–5 and 2–12 sign pairs. Manuals commonly relax it when the two Moon signs have the same lord or lords who are friends. Aries and Scorpio form a 6–8 pair but are both ruled by Mars; Taurus and Libra form a 6–8 pair under Venus; Capricorn and Aquarius form a 2–12 pair under Saturn. Manuals list exceptions; the site shows them as information next to the score, not as a verdict.

Manglik matching

A chart is called Manglik when Mars occupies certain houses. The engine uses the canonical houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 from the Lagna, from the verse "lagne vyaye ca patale jamitre cashtame kuje". The 2nd house is an optional regional variant, and counting from the Moon or Venus is an optional reference. It also evaluates the traditional cancellations: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars with or aspected by Jupiter, and the listed sign–house exceptions.

Mars in these houses from the Lagna: the Manglik condition 123456789101112 Houses 1, 4, 7, 8, 12; the 2nd in some traditions
The houses counted from the Lagna in which Mars makes a chart Manglik: 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12, with the optional 2nd house marked separately.

In matching, the tradition considers two Manglik charts to balance each other. A Manglik chart paired with a non-Manglik one is the case families ask about, and here regional practice varies widely. Being Manglik is a common placement, not a defect in a person.

Reading a matching report

A report from the site lists four layers, and it helps to keep them apart. First come the calculated positions: each partner’s Moon sign, Moon nakshatra and pada, and the house of Mars from the Lagna. Second, the eight koota scores and their total out of 36. Third, any exceptions the manuals list for a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot, and any Manglik cancellations. Fourth, the plain-language notes on what the score does and does not cover.

Only the first layer is a calculation that two careful engines should agree on, given the same birth data and ayanamsa. The second and third layers apply traditional tables, which differ slightly between manuals and regions, so two reports can show totals that differ by a point or two. Neither is an error; they follow different tables.

What Milan does not measure

We know of no rigorous study showing that guna scores predict marital outcomes such as happiness or the duration of a marriage. The score is a traditional comparison of two Moon positions. It can be one part of a family’s cultural process, but it is never a reason to pressure anyone into a marriage or to reject a person.

Consent and the law: the choice of a partner is the decision of the two adults. Indian law sets minimum marriage ages, and the Special Marriage Act, 1954 allows adults to marry regardless of religion or caste. No chart, dosha or score overrides that choice.
