Few words in Jyotish cause as much worry as Sade Sati. Yet the rule behind it is a simple piece of counting, based on the transit rules of the previous lesson. This lesson sets out the definition, the related Dhaiya periods, how often everyone meets them, what the tradition says, and why the site does not endorse the fears that have grown around them.
The definition
Sade Sati means “seven and a half”. It is the period during which transiting Saturn passes through the 12th, the 1st and the 2nd sign counted from your natal Moon sign. Saturn spends about 2.5 years in each sign, so three signs take about 7.5 years. Example: with the natal Moon in Kanya, Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters Simha (the 12th), its middle phase runs while Saturn is in Kanya itself, and it ends when Saturn leaves Tula (the 2nd).
- Rising phase: Saturn in the 12th sign from the Moon (about 2.5 years).
- Peak phase: Saturn in the Moon sign itself (about 2.5 years).
- Setting phase: Saturn in the 2nd sign from the Moon (about 2.5 years).
Because Saturn turns retrograde for several months every year, it can cross a sign boundary, retreat and cross again. Sade Sati can therefore begin, pause and begin again, and its exact length differs by some months from one cycle to the next. The classical gochara chapters read Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon as unfavourable, in line with Saturn’s favourable list of 3, 6 and 11; the name Sade Sati and the detailed phase readings come mostly from later and regional tradition.
Dhaiya: Saturn in the 4th or 8th
Dhaiya means “two and a half”. It is the roughly 2.5-year stay of Saturn in the 4th or the 8th sign from the natal Moon. Saturn in the 4th is often called kantaka Shani (kantaka means thorn), and Saturn in the 8th is called ashtama Shani (ashtama means eighth). Neither house is on Saturn’s favourable list, which is why the tradition singles them out. Some traditions use “kantaka Shani” more widely, for Saturn in any kendra (1, 4, 7 or 10) from the Moon.
How often it comes
Saturn goes round the zodiac in about 29.5 years, so Sade Sati returns about every 29.5 years. If yours begins at age 10, the next would begin around 39 or 40 and the one after around 69. Most people meet it two or three times in a lifetime. It is not a rare mark: at any moment, 3 of the 12 Moon signs are in Sade Sati, roughly a quarter of all people by simple proportion. Add the two Dhaiya signs and 5 of 12 Moon signs, about 42%, are in one of these periods.
The example below shows where Saturn is today counted from your natal Moon sign, and whether you are in Sade Sati (and which phase) or in Dhaiya. It uses your saved birth details, or the sky right now if none are saved. The Sade Sati page gives the start and end dates for your Moon sign.

Common fears, and why the site does not endorse them
Popular writing often describes Sade Sati as years of loss, illness or ruin. The classical method does not read a single transit in isolation: astrologers also weigh Saturn’s ashtakavarga bindus in the signs concerned, the running dasha, and Saturn’s place and dignity in the birth chart. Even within the tradition, then, the same Sade Sati is read differently for different people.
This site shows a Sade Sati label as what it is: a statement of where Saturn stands, not of what will happen. The platform tested its own timing windows, built from slow-planet transits including Saturn’s, on 139 charts with 432 documented life events. The windows contained 114 events against about 106 expected by chance — no measurable timing signal (z ≈ 0.9). Seven and a half years is a long stretch of anyone’s life, so ordinary events of every kind fall inside it.
Honest limit: Sade Sati and Dhaiya are traditional indications. Nothing on this site says that they cause events, and its readings prescribe no paid puja or remedy. The site sells no gemstones and offers no consultations with astrologers.
Devotional practices in the tradition
Many families observe devotional practices during Sade Sati. Common ones are worship of Hanuman and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, worship of Shani on Saturdays, lighting a sesame-oil lamp, fasting on Saturday, and charity such as giving food, black sesame or clothing to people in need. People follow these for their own devotional reasons. They are described here as practices of the tradition; the site makes no claim about their effect.
