Choosing a muhurat is a process of elimination. You start with a window of dates, remove the days whose five limbs do not suit the work, then narrow each remaining day to the hours when a favourable rising sign coincides with no avoided period. Finally, the tradition checks how the chosen time relates to the person through tarabala and chandrabala.
Step 1: match the nakshatra to the activity
Muhurta Chintamani sorts the 27 nakshatras by nature. The fixed (dhruva) group — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada — is preferred for lasting works such as laying a foundation. The movable (chara) group — Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha — suits travel and vehicles. The soft (mridu) group — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati — suits gentle, pleasant beginnings, and the swift (kshipra) group — Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta — suits quick undertakings and learning.
Next, the tithi, vara, yoga and karana are checked as in the previous lesson: no Rikta tithi, no Vishti karana, no Vyatipata or Vaidhriti yoga. Then the daily periods are removed — Rahu kaal and Yamaganda, and, where the family follows it, an unfavourable Choghadiya.
Step 2: lagna shuddhi
The rising sign (lagna) changes roughly every two hours, so within one good day there are better and worse windows. Lagna shuddhi, as commonly taught from Muhurta Chintamani, asks that benefics such as Jupiter, Venus and a well-placed Mercury occupy the kendras (houses 1, 4, 7 and 10), that malefics sit preferably in houses 3, 6 or 11, and that the 8th house be empty. For a wedding, the 7th house is also expected to be free of planets.
Worked example: if Leo is rising at 10:40 and Jupiter is in Scorpio, count Leo as 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4 — Jupiter is in the 4th house, a kendra. If no planet stands in Pisces, the 8th sign from Leo, the 8th house is empty. That window passes this filter, though it must still clear the others.
Step 3: tarabala and chandrabala
Tarabala relates the day's nakshatra to the person's birth nakshatra. Count from the birth nakshatra to the day's nakshatra, inclusive, and take the remainder after dividing by 9 (a remainder of 0 counts as 9). The nine taras are Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyari, Sadhaka, Vadha, Mitra and Parama Mitra. The 3rd, 5th and 7th (Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha) are avoided. Example: birth in Rohini (4th nakshatra), day in Hasta (13th): 13 − 4 + 1 = 10, remainder 1, Janma tara.
Chandrabala counts the sign the Moon is transiting from the natal Moon sign. Many lists treat the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th as favourable; the 8th, called chandrashtama, is especially avoided. Example: natal Moon in Taurus, transiting Moon in Sagittarius — Taurus 1, Gemini 2 … Sagittarius 8, so that day is chandrashtama for this person.
Traditions around marriage dates
- Jupiter and Venus should not be combust (asta, too close to the Sun). Weddings are traditionally not held while either is combust.
- By tradition, many families avoid Kharmas (the Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces), the four months of Chaturmas, and the Adhik (intercalary) month.
- The Vivaha prakarana of Muhurta Chintamani lists suitable nakshatras for marriage; among them are Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha and Revati.
Regions differ. Months may be named on the Amanta or Purnimanta scheme, some communities keep Chaturmas strictly and others do not, and South Indian almanacs give Rahu kaal and the Tamil or Telugu calendar more weight. Two careful almanacs can therefore list different wedding dates for the same year.
Honest limits
A muhurat is a devotional and cultural choice. It gives a family a shared, meaningful start, and that has real value. It does not guarantee an outcome: we know of no study showing that weddings or businesses begun in a chosen muhurat fare better. The site's muhurat pages rank candidate windows with the Udyog scoring model, which combines the factors above using weights chosen by the platform. Those weights are proprietary, not a classical formula, and the page lists the factors behind each score.
To practise, open today's panchang below and run the first filter yourself: is today's tithi Rikta, is the karana Vishti, and is the yoga Vyatipata or Vaidhriti?
